What are All on 4 dental implants?
As you may already know, a standard dental implant involves replacing each tooth root with a strong titanium screw, supporting a replacement tooth that is customised to look like your existing teeth. All on 4 dental implants, for their part, replace four roots on the top and four on the bottom, and from these the dentist can anchor all the replacement teeth that you might need rather than placing a screw for each tooth.
How does the All on 4 procedure work?
Before carrying out any work on your teeth and gums, your dentist will first ensure that you are administered an appropriate anesthetic so that you are comfortable. They will then identify any teeth that may be failing and need to be removed. After removing those teeth, the dentist will also remove any infected tissue from your gums.
Only once that clean-up work has been done will the dentist place the implants, inserting four titanium screws into your jawbone: two at the back, and two at the front. This distribution ensures that the mouth can handle the force of any replacements that are placed. Once the implants and replacements have been put in place, the mouth is cleaned up, and any sutures that might be needed are performed, before you are taken to a recovery room to come around from the anaesthetic.
How long will it take me to recover from All on 4 Dental Implants?
While ordinary dentures have a recovery time that can be measured in months, the good news is that All on 4 implants can reduce that time significantly. Any strenuous exercise should be avoided entirely for at least four to five days, and you should prioritise bed or couch rest during this time. Bending over, heavy lifting or other undue physical exertion could cause sutures to break and bleeding to begin again – setting back your recovery – and should therefore be avoided.
Within 24 hours of your surgery you should only, very gently, brush the affected areas, and then wash the mouth out with salt water. A single teaspoon of salt in eight ounces of water should be enough to help keep the area sterile.
What can I eat after All on 4 Dental Implants?
For three months after the implants are placed, you must eat a diet of soft foods – nothing crunchy, chewy or hard. This is because you will still be integrating the implanted screws into your jawbone, and they must not be placed under strain during this time.
