Gum Disease
Many adults may have some form of periodontal disease otherwise known as gum disease. Gingivitis, or gum inflammation, usually precedes periodontal disease. The bacteria in plaque causes this inflammation and irritation in the gums. If gingivitis is left untreated, it can advance to more severe gum disease. When one has periodontal disease, the inner layer of the gum, and eventually bone, pull away from the teeth forming pockets. These pockets can become infected. In time, gum disease can cause tooth loss or the destruction of the tissue surrounding your teeth.
Periodontics: Dental Deep Cleaning
To treat gum disease, your dentist may recommend a scale and root planing, or more commonly known as a dental deep cleaning. This is a non-surgical procedure where plaque and tartar from above and below the gum line are scraped away. Teeth are then smoothed over of any rough spots to rid bacteria and provide a clean surface for gums to reattach. If necessary, we can also place antibiotics directly to the infected pockets of your gums.
